Flash No. 248 (1992)
Flash (フラッシュ) is a Japanese weekly magazine firstly published in 1986. The magazine features celebrity interviews, fashion and entertainment content, with some sections resembling a Playboy-style aesthetic.
Toward the end of 1991, the Seattle Mariners Major League Baseball team were on the verge of bankruptcy and Nintendo of America’s headquarters were located in Seattle. Additionally, Nintendo released the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in North America on August 23, 1991. So, on January 23, 1992, Hiroshi Yamauchi announced his plans to purchase the Seattle Mariners for $125 million, obtaining approval after nearly six months, which helped promote the new console.
Flash issue 248, dated February 18, 1992, contains an in-depth five-page article on Nintendo. The cover of this issue credits the article with the phrase 大研究! 大リーグ買収任天堂の”花札”時代 (“A Deep Study! Nintendo’s “Hanafuda” Era and Its Acquisition of Major League Baseball”).
The article explores Nintendo’s history, from its origins as a manufacturer of hanafuda, through toys, to consoles. It focuses on the recent acquisition of the Seattle Mariners baseball team and its development plans with the recent launch of the Super Nintendo.
